Summary

Upgrade the project from Go 1.25.0 to Go 1.26.0 and add go fix ./... as a CI gate.

Motivation

Go 1.26 ships with a completely revamped go fix command that serves as the home for Go's modernizers. It provides a push-button way to update codebases to the latest idioms and core library APIs. Adding it to CI ensures the codebase stays modernized automatically.

Key Go 1.26 features:

Revamped go fix with dozens of modernizers
Green Tea garbage collector (10-40% GC overhead reduction)
new() with initial value expressions
Self-referential generic type constraints
~30% faster cgo calls
New errors.AsType generic function

Tasks

Bump go.mod to go 1.26.0
Bump GO_VERSION in .github/workflows/ci.yml to 1.26.0
Add go fix ./... check step to CI (fail if it produces changes)
Run go fix ./... on the codebase and commit the modernized code
Verify tests and linter pass with Go 1.26
